what was the first new deal
A
- rapid, national action
- federal government took over policy-making of individual states
- federal institutions created were temporary
- some plans could only happen with federal agency co-ordinating activities in several states (alphabet agencies)

national recovery administration (NRA)
A
- enforce codes of practice for businesses
- fixing working hours and minimum wage
- didn’t have to join
- public encouraged to support businesses that displayed NRA symbol in shop window
- people thought it was unconstitutional

agricultural adjustment agency (AAA)
A
- regulate major crops grown in the USA
- purchased surplus crops at good prices and subsidised farmers who were told not to grow crops that were being overproduced
- up to 6 million farmers participated in it
- total farm income almost doubled that in 1930

Tennessee valley authority (TVA)
A
- administered public work projects in the states that included the Tennessee river
- e.g. construction of immense dams that utilised the river for power and reservoirs
- argued that construction of atomic bomb in WW2 would not have been possible without TVA water power at Oak Ridge

civilian conservation corps (CCC)
A
- enrolled young men and boys needing work
- set tasks only government could undertake like re-forestation, flood control projects and building dams
- up to 3 million young men joined the CCC

federal emergency relief administration (FERA)
A
- designed to meet broader needs of the nation
- provide direct aid for the unemployed
- had 500 million dollars available for the purpose
- part of FERA was the civilian works administration (CWA) although it didn’t work as well as other measures and so was replaced by the works progress administration
