Olfactory
Are the olfactory bulb and the olfactory tract CN 1?
No, they are extensions of the CNS.
What is the olfactory bulb?
a nucleus containing second order olfactory neurons
What is the olfactory tract?
The axons of mitral cells
What are mitral cells?
Second order olfactory neurons of the olfactory bulb.
Input: olfactory information from olfactory receptor nucleus
What is the “olfactory nerve”
a collection of very short axons of the olfactory receptor neurons that pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone to synapse on mitral cells.
What are the olfactory receptor neurons?
a component of the olfactory epithelium lining the roof and adjacent walls of the nasal cavity.
Does the olfactory system relay first though the thalamus?
No. This is what is unique about it.
It proceeds directly to the primary olfactory cortex and amgydala.
What is the Primary olfactory cortex composed of?
Piriform Cortex
Parahippocampal gyrus
Periamygdalaoid cortex
Where does olfactory information project to after it arrives at the primary olfactory cortex and the amygdala
- hippocampus
- Hypothalamus
- Orbital frontal association cortex via thalamus \
Besides olfactory information what the special sensory does the orbital frontal association cortex receive?
Taste
This may be why we are able to perceive flavor
What might the direct input of olfactory information to the amygdala entail?
Smells triggering memories and why we enjoy eating certain foods
