FC13 Group 2 Flashcards
Does reactivity increase or decrease down group 2 and why (4 marks)
Increases
- Extra shells so increase distance and more shielding
- Weaker attraction between electrons and nucleus
- Distance and shielding outweigh the increase in nuclear charge
- Electrons can be removed easier
What is formed when group 2 reacts with water
metal hydroxides and hydrogen
Does group 2s reactivity with water increase or decrease down group
Increase - no reaction with Be
- Electrons are easier to remove going down the group
How does Mg react with cold water
Slowly
How does Mg react with steam
Vigorously
When Mg reacts with steam what is produced
MgO and H2
What is produced when group 2 elements react with oxygen
Metal oxides
what colour are group 2 oxides when solid
White solids
What is produced when group 2 oxides reacted with water
Alkaline solutions formed
e.g. SrO +H2O -> Sr(OH)2
What is an observation made when MgO reacts with water
It’s very slow and the OH- barely dissolves
Do the group 2 hydroxides get more or less soluble going down the group
More soluble
What are group 2 oxides and hydroxides, so what can they do
Bases, they can neutralise acids
What is the use of Calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2
used to neutralise acidic soil
What does magnesium hydroxide do - Mg(OH)2
Neutralises excess stomach acid - acts as an antacid
