Fauvism Flashcards
artistic freedom growing ever since when
Since the romantic movement, there was an ever growing spirit of individuality and artistic freedom
“fauves’ means ?
‘Fauves’ = ‘wild beasts’ in French - called this due to their extreme and ‘wild’ style characterised by intense use of colour and untamed sinuous line - intense colour and free form that indicated a primal wildness
How is colour now used in a new way
Artists now looked towards interior, emotional spaces for inspiration - colour now used for emotional qualities which had not been done before
colour is used expressively and non-naturalistically
Common subject matter
Subject matter was more basic: favoured suburban scenes and bucolic landscapes : subject matter played simply a supporting role to formal elements - line, colour, forms
Subject matter was stripped of any social commentary and tamed to familiar scenery - what instead stirred up intrigue and controversy was the wild colours
Where and when did the fauves first exhibited their work
Salon d’Automne
when did they discover ‘primitive’ art and why did they like it
The fauves ‘discovered’ primitive art in Paris in 1904 - the apparent absence of an accessible iconography or history to the primitive objects allowed them to be easily absorbed into a modern artistic culture
Influence of Primitivism: caused the works to look ‘child-like’ with simple subject matter, unfinished lines, and large areas of colour that float unanchored by perspective
