Faults Flashcards
How and what is a dip slip fault?
Form under compressional or tension
Rocks are displace parallel to dip
Rocks are either stretched or smashed
What happens in a normal fault?
Tensile stress
Hanging wall is downthrown
What happens in a reverse fault?
Compressive and hanging wall is upthrown
What is a thrust fault?
a step fault?
a Horst and graben fault?
Thrust- low angle reverse
Step-series of normal faults dipping the same way(like steps)
Horst and graben- 2 normal faults dipping towards each other
What are features of fault planes?
Fault breccia-where competent rocks shatter along a fault plane
Slicked slides- where rocks are polished and scratched by movement forming linear fooled and ridges
What are strike slip faults?
Rocks displaces parallel to strike fault plane
What is a fault?
When rocks are put under differential stress and fracture in a brittle manner
