Faulting and Folding Flashcards
1
Q
Normal Fault
A
The block above the fault moves down relative to the block below the fault.
2
Q
Reverse Fault
A
The block above the fault moves up relative to the block below the fault
3
Q
Strike-slip (or transcurrent) fault
A
The movement of blocks along a fault is horizontal. A special type of strike-slip fault is the transform fault.
4
Q
3 types of forces deforming the crust
A
Compressive
Tensional
Shearing
5
Q
How do folds occur
A
A fold forms when pressure is exerted inwards from both sides
Folds that bend upwards are called anticlines
Those that bend downwards are synclines
6
Q
Folding
A
As the plates push together, the continental crust is squashed together and forced upwards
