What are the two types of fats?
Saturated and unsaturated
Diet high in saturated fats can lead to
Raises blood cholesterol levels particularly the bad cholesterol which is the LDL
What are functions of fats?
- to provide a source of fat-soluble vitamins (ADEK)
- to provide a concentrated source of energy
- to provide a feeling of fullness
Sources of saturated fats?
meat, butter, milk, cheese, cream, eggs
but also: coconut and palm oil
What does monounsaturated help to do?
- Monounsaturated fats reduce the (bad) LDL cholesterol
- Help to increase the HDL cholesterol
Sources of monounsaturated fats
-olive oil, rapeseed oil, avocados, nuts
What does polyunsaturated fats do?
- They help down bring cholesterol levels
- and ultimately provide the body with essential fatty acids which cannot be produced by the body itself
Why are Omega 3 and 6 needed?
For brain development in babies
Sources of polyunsaturated fats?
- olive oil
- nuts
- oily fish: mackerel, salmon, sardines
Sources of monounsaturated fats?
- olive oil
- nuts
- avocados
Diet high in trans-fatty acids can lead to what?
- They cause an increased risk of heart disease
- increase LDL cholesterol levels
- reduces HDL cholesterol levels

- packaged snacks
- hard margarine
- biscuits
