Function of Fats (lipids)

- Helps absorb vitamins, Component of cell membrane

- made up of 3 fatty acid chains bonded to a glycerol molecule
- Called a triglyceride
Types of fats
Saturated: Solid at room temperature, every carbon bond filled with hydrogen
Unsaturated: oils, liquid at room temp, some carbon bonds are not filled with hydrogen, have carbon double bonds
Steroids: Sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen) & Cholesterol
Cholestrol: Good and bad cholesterol
Essential substance for the body
Too much is harmful for the body
It is a lipid molecule essential for the structure of the cell membrane
Sex Hormones
control the development of male and female sex characteristics
Daily Energy Needs
Daily Energy Needs: no more than 30% of energy intake
Examples: butter, olive oil, nuts, seeds, beef, salmon, tuna
Stored: AS FAT in body
