Carbohydrates Flashcards
Function of carbohydrates
Main energy source of the body
Composition of carbohydrates
Molecules containing atoms of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of 1:2:1 (Example: glucose
3 types of carboyhdrates
Monosaccharide
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
Monosaccharide
made up of a single sugar molecule
(glucose and frucose).
-fruits, vegetables, honey
Polysaccharides
Complex carbohydrate made up of many single sugars linked together (starch and cellulose)
Disaccharides
Made up of 2 sugar molecules joined together (sugar and lactose)
-sugars, milk
Healthy Carbohydrates
-includes vegetables, fruits, potatoes and grains
How are carbohydrates stored
- in the liver and muscle tissues in the form of glycogen
- if the glycogen storage is full, excess carbohydrates can be converted to lipids to be stored a body fat
