Fat transportation Flashcards
3 primary sources of fat?
Diet, de novo biosynthesis (liver- from scratch) and storage depots in adipose
Where are bile salts generated and stored?
Liver and gallbladder
Steatorrhea?
Undigested and unabsorbed fat resulting in fatty stool due to a lack of bile salts
Orlistat?
Potent inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic lipases, reduces fat absorption by 30%. Treats obesity. Can produce abdominal pain, urgency to defecate and steatorrhea
How are lipids transported around the body?
Lipids are transported in the plasma by lipoproteins
Journey of CM’s?
Lacteals of intestine → thoracic duct → left subclavian vein to enter bloodstream
Where is lipoprotein lipase located?
Capillary endothelial cells lining tissues including adipose, heart and skeletal muscle
Why are HDL’s referred to as ‘good cholesterol’?
They help lower total serum cholesterol by taking cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver (reverse cholesterol transport)
Why are LDL’s referred to as ‘bad cholesterol’?
Prolonged elevation of LDL levels leads to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). LDL’s mainly transport cholesterol esters.
