Fat carriers and compositions Flashcards
VLDL - what is it and what does it do?
Very low density lipoprotein
livers cholesterol is packaged in VLDL along with the TAG and taken out to body tissues (muscle, adipose etc.)
LDL - what is it, what is it made from and what does it do?
Low density lipoprotein
takes fat (and TAG) away from the liver to peripheral tissues
made from VLDL remnants
bad for health as it deposits cholesterol in the arteries of the body
HDL - what is it and what does it do?
High density lipoprotein
takes cholesterol from the tissues back to the liver for processing
Chylomicrons composition - percentage of TAG’s, cholesterol and phospholipids
98% TAG’s
1% cholesterol
1% phospholipids
VLDL composition - percentage of TAG’s, cholesterol and phospholipids
60% TAG’s
20% cholesterol
20% phospholipids
LDL composition - percentage of TAG’s, cholesterol and phospholipids
15% TAG’s
60% cholesterol
25% phospholipids
HDL composition - percentage of TAG’s, cholesterol and phospholipids
10% TAG’s
30% cholesterol
60% phospholipids
