Fasteners Flashcards
Define the effective diameter of a bolt
-> imaginary line through the middle of the tooth
Define pitch of a thread
-> distance from any point of a thread to the corresponding point on the next
Define major diameter
- > distance from root to root on nut
- > distance from crest to crest on bolt
Define Crest
-> top surface of thread
Define Root
-> Bottom of the groove
define the flank or side
-> surface that connects root to crest
Define thread angle
-> angle between the flanks
Define Angular Depth
-> the triangle formed by the intersection of the extended flanks
Define Actual Depth
-> distance between the crest and root measured
Define the fundamental Triangle
-> imaginary triangle created from the crest to root to crest
Define Lead
-> the distance the screw thread advances axially in one complete turn
Define Class 5 fit
-> Tight Fit
Define Class 4 fit
-> Close fit
Define class 3 fit
-> Medium fit
Define class 2 fit
-> Free fit
Define class 1 fit
-> Loose fit
Define Square thread
- > square teeth
- > where all dimensions are pitch/2
Define Acme Thread
- > modified square thread
- > wedge shaped
- > thread angle of 29 degrees
Define Buttress thread
- > one face at 90 to axis
- > other at 45
- > used in quick release bench vices
Define Ball screw thread
- > half circle cut outs
- > used in flap drives
What is the angle of BA thread
47.5 degrees
What is the BSW and BSF thread
55 degrees
what is the angle of UNC, UNF and metric threads
60 degrees
what is the difference between a bolt and a screw
bolt = has head then shank or grip then thread screw = has head then all thread
Name the types of stiff nut
- > Oddie
- > Philidas
- > aerotight
Define the oddie nut
-> nut with six tongues on top, diameter of tongues smaller than diameter of thread
Describe Philidas Nut
-> nut with section on top, that has two horizontal slits that are 270 degree apart
Describe Aerotight nut
-> nut has circular crown with vertical slot across diamater
what are the types of thread inserts
- > helicoil - wire thread
- > thin walled
describe helicoil
- > Diamond section wire
- > wound into spring shaped
- > with tang
Describe Thin walled insert
- > has external and internal thread
- > screws into tapped hole and locked in place with key
Describe a ‘pip’ pin
- > quick release pin
- > not used in structural load
Describe a Dzus fastener
- > quick release
- > usually released or locked with a 1/4 turn
- > slot on the screw fits onto tab in retainer
Describe camloc fastener
- > quick release
- > spring loaded
- > 1/4 turn
describe oddie Fasteneres
- > quick release
- > uses spring clip
List the protruding head rivets
- > round or snap
- > flat head
- > mushroom
- > Universal
where is the protruding head rivets used
-> not used in the airflow
list types of flush head rivets
- > 100 degree countersink
- > 78 degree countersink
- > 120 degree countersink
- > double angle (82/30 degrees) fluid tight countersink
- > briles type countersink
- > reduced shear head 100 degree
Describe ‘pop’ rivets
->two types - standard (leave nothing in the gap) break-stem ( leaves bit in gap)
describe a chobert rivets
-> rivet that uses a mandrel to expand the rivet and a pin can be put in the hole
Describe avdel rivets
-> similar to pop rivet except inner section remains in place and is milled flush
Describe Self plugging rivets
- > Mechanical lock
- > screws rivet into place
Describe thread pin fasteners
- > rivet that has a torque off nut head
- >when put inplace the nut is torqued untill the nut head snaps off
Describe Blind Bolt rivets
- > has a sleeve on top
- > uses an expander nut
Describe Hi-lok
- > bolt with hex recess
- > holding device that is held
Describe Rivnuts
-> rivet that has a bolt through it that when used the bolt pulls rivet inplace then is removed
