What does FAST stand for
focused assessment with sonography for trauma
Advantages of FAST scans
quick
non-invasive
no radiation exposure
Disadvantages of FAST scans
User dependant No additional information as you'd get with a CT Can have false +ve and -ve Doesn't evaluate solid viscera injuries artefact from free bowel gas and bones can't exclude retroperitoneal bleed
What can cause a false +ve FAST scan result
heart failure
ascites
pregnancy
seminal vesicles (especially in younger men)
What can cause a false -ve FAST scan result
obesity
full bladder
subcutaneous emphysema

anterior pleura
