Blood products Flashcards
What does cryoprecipitate provide to a bleeding patient
fibrinogen
vWF
Factors 8 and 13
How is cryoprecipitate prepared
by thawing FFP and refreezing
What what be a good blood product for a warfarin patient who is bleeding and what would be a bad product, why?
Prothrombin complex concentrate is good as it contains vit K dependant factors
cryoprecipitate is bad as it does not
What is plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 and where is it found
Fibrinolysis inhibitor found in bags of platelets
What ratio of bags (not units) do you need of RBC:plasma:platelets
6:6:1 because each bag of platelets contains 6 units whereas the others contain only 1
What are the benefits of giving whole blood
simper just to have 1 product
less anticoagulant as each bag contains anticoagulants
whole blood contains more clotting factors and haematocrit than the individual bags
What does FFP contain
factors 5 & 8 factors 9 & 10 (cryo doesn't contain these) fibrinogen protein C and S albumin immunoglobulins
What are the potential effects of FFP on coagulation
restoration of the glycocalyx
prevents expression of activated protein C
restores INR
Who can you give o+ve blood products to
men
postmenopausal women
What factors does prothrombin complex concentrate contain
vitamin K dependant 2,7,9,10
protein C and S
Why is fibrinogen concentrate not used
expensive
the added benefits aren’t known
