Far From The Tree Flashcards
Deafness and Language
It is urgent that a children learn language development early on. Regardless of the language.
Deaf children of deaf parents perform better and thrive more compared to deaf children of hearing parents because there isn’t a language barrier.
White, wealthy parents are more likely to seek an implant or oral language training. However, this puts the child in a position of having to learn basics of a new language when their peers have already mastered the basics and are learning fundamentals of life and education.
It is arguably best to raise a deaf child bilingually until it is clear which mode is best for them to learn and develop. (Oral/spoken language vs sign).
Cochlear implants work best on children whose brains haven’t developed around language as much. However, it is difficult to determine how much residual hearing a deaf child may have. Residual hearing can be excellent in allowing a deaf person to function in a hearing society. So it is a risk to give a child an inpka
