Family
A group of people who are related by kinship ties, marriage, blood or adoption.
Household
A group of people who live at the same address.
Nuclear family
It consists of a heterosexual couple who have one or more dependant children that could be biological or adopted.
Murdoch- nuclear families
Nuclear families are universal as they could be found in every society.
Extended family
Families that include kins beyond the nuclear family.
Vertical extended family
A family that includes at least three generations.
Horizontal extended family
A family that includes at least two generations. (Uncle and aunty)
Young and Willmott- symmetrical family
Argued that symmetrical families have spread to all social classes, in as symmetrical family there are joint conjugal roles.
Beck and beck- individualisation
People choose to live their own lifestyles rather than follow the set norms of society.
Willmott- dispersed extended family
When kins do not live at the same household.
Lone-parent families
Where at least one child lives with only one parent.
Spencer- lone parent families
Suggested that governments should not stigmatise lone parent families and try to reduce inequalities.
Same sex couples allowed to adopt

Living together but not married.
Civil partnership
Not a marriage, but gives you the legal rights of a heterosexual couple.
