What is a social policy

A

A social policy is aimed at changing or improving social conditions and usually enforced by acts of Parliament and so becoming laws
It is an attempt by the government to deal with a social problem such as homelessness or poverty or in the family such as child neglect or divorce for example

Give three examples of historical examples of social policy aimed at the family have attempted to change the nature of particular societies

A

Russia - destroy the family so abortion and divorce were made available after 1917 but family life was strengthen after the 1930s - divorce laws tightened and abortion made illegal (communist gov)

Romania - increase the population between 1984 and 1990 and so contraception was illegal,abortion laws tightened, legal age for marriage reduced to 15, taxes were increased for over 25 unmarried and no children

China and Singapore - population limitation about 36% restricted to having one child
