Family diversity 2 Flashcards
What do the Rapoports argue
we have to acknowledge that the UK is not dominated with one family type but celebrating family diversity and the uk is characterised by 6 different types of diversity
What are the 5 different types of diversity
Organisational Cultural Class Life-cycle Generational
What is Organisational diversity
the differences in the ways family roles are organised such as full income household or one-income households , joint or segregated conjugal roles
What is cultural diversity
distinct differences in lifestyles of families of different ethnic origins and religious beliefs. Asian family is diverse and depends on a wide range of issues such as religion, extended kin and cultural beliefs. We have seen a great deal of inter-marriage resulted in a dramatic increase in mixed-race children
Explain class diversity
difference in MC and WC in terms of relationship between wife and husband, socialaisation and discipline
MC = more child-centered and take greater interest in school and pass on cultural advantages such as attitudes and values which assist their children in education however people argue WC they are still child-centered but material deprivation limits how much they can give them
Extended kinship are more important to UC to maintain wealth and privilege, the economic and political elite may use marriage and family connections to ensure social closure - keep those do not share their culture from becoming part of the elite
Explain life-cycle diversity
stages of the life cycle - married-couple household and single person households may have evolved out of nuclear units or may evolve into nuclear units in the future such as a young married couple may have children in the future whilst an older married couple may be an empty nest family household
Explain generational diversity
A cohort is a group of people born over the same period of time which experience different patterns of family life than their parents generation because family is influenced by wider social/historical events
Explain regional diversity
there are geographical variations in family life e.g. seaside areas = older people and single-person households whilst inner cities = single parent households, reconstituted families and ethnic minority families
Explain friendship networks
some claim these constitute as a type of family and argue important social change is taking place in whom we see to be part of our family rather than blood or marriage such as students share housing and feel a strong sense of obligation to their housemates
Who looked at reasons for diversification
Allan and Crow (2001)
What did Allan and Crow (2001) argue
diversification is an on-going and evolving process.
Theres an increasing separation of sex, marriage and parenthood and identify several reasons for increasing family diversity and so there is no predictability in family life-cycle
identify several reasons for increasing family diversity
Rising divorce rate caused by changes in divorce law ,rising in social acceptance and greater independence for women
Increase in lone-parent households - Increase in divorce
Cohabitation has become increasingly socially acceptable - result of secularisation
Declining marriage rates - marry later or not at all
Rise in stepfamilies -increase in divorce and people remarry
What do postmodernist agree with
Rapoports that postmodern family is characterised by diversity, variation and instability and women no longer aspire for marriage and children and premarital sex, serial monogamy , coalition are all social acceptable alternatives
Who looks at postmodernism and diversity and what does she argue
Stacey argues in the postmodern era families are varied in the structure and form they take , they are constantly changing and no set structure which is regarded as ideal
Who disagrees with Stacey and why
Chester - postmodernist arguments about family diversity is exaggerated and the basic features of family life modelled on the heterosexual nuclear family have remained the majority
