The efficient use of resources to achieve goals
Resources
Anything used to achieve a goal e.g time, money, skills, information
Purpose
Improves quality of family life e,g reduce stress and worry
Helps families achieve goals
Make efficient use of all resources available and minimise waste
Allow for unexpected change e.g Job loss
Types of resource management
Open system
Closed system
Closed system
Does not rely or interact with systems outside the family. All activities occur within the family e.g the self- sufficient Amish community does not avail of any e.g government educational systems
Open system
Depends on and interacts with systems outside the family to achieve goals e.g health care , education systems, social welfare
Components of management
Input, throughput, output
Input
Anything brought into the management system
Made up of demands and resources
Demands ( inputs )
Needs, wants, goals, values
Resources ( inputs)
Time, skill, material, environment
Throughput
Processing the inputs ( active / doing stage )
Involve the process of planning, organising, implementing
Output
The end result of the inputs and throughputs
Evaluated in the terms : goals, resources, feedback, improvements

Values, socio económico background, employment patterns, size + composition of the family, gender roles, culture
