Umbrella scentence
Both poems present family relationships as strong and unbreakable throughout the poems.
TS1
In both poems, the subjects are prevented of their own independence as a result of their strong family relationships.
TS2
Whilst in “Mother any distance” the mother still supports her child, in “Follower” the roles are reversed signifying a change in family relationships.
TS3
Whilst in “Follower” the speaker admires his father’s physical skills, in “Mother any distance” the speaker admires her support dues to their strong relationships.
“Broad shadow” - Follower
L - Adjective
I - 1) He is literally in his fathers shadow following him
2) He needs to move out of his fathers shadow in order to gain independence and thrive in his own life
“Fall or fly” - Mother any distance
L - Alliteration
R - draws the reader’s attention to “fall” and “fly”
D - connotations of a bird, it has to leave the nest for dependence, he will either fall and fail or fly and thrive
- relationship must be weakened in order for him to leave
“But today” - Follower
“Stumbling” (repeated) - Follower
L - Ceasura - emphasises the contrast between past and present
L- Repetition
- roles are reversed as father is frail and old, therefore he is now dependent on son
- went from the father carrying the son to the son supporting the father
“Anchor. Kite” - Mother any distance
L - ceasura - emphasises it’s necessary for them to separate like the the sentence structure
I - 1) He is trying to fly but the mother is holding him down from flying away and leaving
2) the mother needs to support him as the anchor and control him
“An expert” - Follower
L - adjective
- the son admires his fathers physical skills
D - the poet suggests his poetry is expertly crafted like the farming
C - His poetry is about nature and is trying to mimic his father’s work through literature
“Space-walk” - Mother any distance
“Spool of tape”
L - metaphor
- reflects how much space their is and how strange it feels
I - 1) he is literally measuring the wall
2) it feels terrestrial to have so much space - the tape signifies his support
