Primary function of FLO
Is that of an investigator and not a support person. However, still may offer and coordinate support
Who family relates to
Partners, parents, siblings, children, guardians, whanau and other who had close relationship with the victim. Also chosen family and should reflect victims culture/lifestyle.
4 things FLO to inform family after arrest
- Rights to VNR / Ascertain views on bail / Charges laid or reasons why not / Date of each court appearance/ Bail conditions / Any name suppression sought

- Complaints made by family and actions to progress/resolve

Ensure they are fully informed of what is required of them and what they should expect to see, particularly after PM
Cultural beliefs
FLO should identify any cultural origins of victims family and ensure they are familiar with relevant beliefs/protocols to enhance relations
Who takes the vis and how old can it be for sentencing
Homicide trained VS volunteers are trained to assist Police by taking VIS.
No older than 28 days at sentencing
