Q

Techniques for presenting info to patients?

A

Present the most important information first
Offer information—“Is there anything going on right now you’d like to talk about?”
Combine sight and sound when presenting information (ex: white boards)
Ask patients and family members what they want to know about the illness
Categorize: Treatment, side effects
Don’t be afraid to repeat information

Give information in small amounts whenever possible
Involve family members and supportive friends in the decision-making as early as possible
Try to give information when people are relatively calm
Speak plainly and use short sentences (elderly have more vision and hearing problems and find long sentences, rapid speech and unfamiliar terms hard to understand)

Ask for questions
Help the patient and family understand from the beginning that there are choices
Be responsive to even the most searching and difficult questions
Encourage patients/families to ask the physician questions that only the physician can answer (keep notebook or tape record)
Ask questions (repeat back to you)

Use silence—a long pause will allow questions or comments that will advise in what direction to take next
Take time to sit down
Maintain eye contact
Watch your body language—Patients and families are very sensitive to facial expressions, nuances of body positions and nervous habits
Do not worry about saying the right thing—simple and sincere communication
