FAMILY DYSFUNCTION Flashcards
What are two psychological explanations for schizophrenia?
EE and Double Bind Theory
What is EE?
Expressed emotion is when an individual is surrounded by an environment which is very hostile and negative. Emotions are are shown to a high degree.
What is the Double Bind Theory?
When an individual receives mixed messages from family members.
What did Kuipers et al discover about high levels of EE and how it is linked to sz?
High EE relative talk more and listen less. It causes relapses.
What is an example of the double bind theory?
If a mother tells her son that she loves him but then turns away in disgust .
How does the dbt link to the development of schizophrenia ?
The child will find it difficult to construct a reality that is coherent and therefore this will manifest itself as schizophrenic symptoms.
What is supporting evidence for the double bind theory?
Berger(1965) = found a high recall of double bind statements by their mothers than non-schizophrenics. But this evidence may not be reliable since their recall could be affected by their condition.
What is a weakness of the family dysfunction explanation for sz?
Some people who live in high EE families do not relapse and not all people who live in low EE families avoid relapses.
Why is the double bind theory an ethical issue?
Because it merely blames the family for the develop, end of schizophrenia. It also also mostly blames mothers therefore it is very sensitive.
