A

Stacey states that greater freedom and choice has benefitted women. It has enabled them too be able to free themselves from patriarchal oppression and o shape their family arrangements to meet their needs. She found this by conducting interviews on women in California and she stated that they rejected the traditional house wife role and instead went out to work.

What does the individualisation thesis state ?

A

The individualisation thesis argues that traditional social structures ( class, gender + family ) have lost much of their influence over us. Individuals in today’s society are no longer expected to follow fixed roles they are placed in.

What does Giddens state about family diversity ?

A

Giddens believes that society has become ‘disembodied’ from traditional family structures, leaving us free to choose how we live our lives this has led to the ‘pure relationship’ - one that solely exists to satisfy each partner’s needs. He believes contraception has allowed relationships to be based of pleasure rather than reproducing and women’s independence.

A

It exaggerates how cub choice people have about family relationships today.
The thesis wrongly sees people as free-floating, independent individuals. It ignores the fact that our decisions and choices about personal relationships are made within social context
