Concerns about family diversity
◾️ concerns have come from the new right thinkers who see diversity just trying to additional family values
◾️ Believe families other than the nuclear family do not function as effectively in socialising children and providing a stable family life
Support for diversity
Giddens argues there has been a democratisation of intimate relationships meaning that individuals are not forced into relationships but only engage with them when they find them for filling meaning that there is more equality between partners
Feminists also support family diversity as they believe the nuclear family was patriarchal
Persistence of patriarchy
Langford (1999) Argues love has the potential to be liberating and transforming but suggest women end up feeling alienated it as they’re the ones who invest emotionally into relationship and don’t receive it back
Chambers (2012) Women who reject traditional forms of family still face condemrion from traditional sections of society and mass media
