Marriage-
A legally recognized arrangement that carries
certain rights and obligations.

polygamy
The concurrent marriage of a person of one
sex with two or more members of the
opposite sex.
polygyny
The concurrent marriage of one man with two or
more women
polyandry
The marriage of one woman with two or more
men.
Endogamy
Cultural norms prescribing that people marry strictly
within their own social group or category.
Same religion ex. Jewish person can only marry
another Jewish person
homogamy
The pattern of individuals marrying those
who have similar characteristics,
exogamy
Refers to cultural norms prescribing that
people must marry outside their own social
group or category

Four key functions of families:
- Sexual regulation
- Socialization
- Economic and psychological support for members.
- Provision of social status and reputation

This reduces role confusion in the family, and allows it to better
fulfill its 4 basic functions.
Forces people to look outside of the family to marry. This ties more
families together in a society – creating social cohesion
