families - family diversity Flashcards
modernism - functionalist view
didnt comment on fd
saw nf as most most ‘natural’ –> based on biological division of labour
modernism - new right view
political rather than sociological
strongly opposed fd
nf seen as only type to effectively perform its functions
other types seen as unnatural + cause of social problems
e.g. lone parent = poor socialisation –> deviance, dependency culture –> burden on state welfare
Bensen - study found:
cohabiting couples = 20% breakdown
marital couples = 6% breakdown
–> argues couples r more stable when married as it requires deliberate commitment
modernism - new right evaluation
- no evidence of LPF putting children at disadvantage
- allows for continual exploitation of women
- marriage is patriarchal
- male dominance = domestic violence
modernism - Chester:
neo-conventional family
= although increase in diversity, nuclear family remains dominant + most aspirational
= only significant shift in change from conventional family (segregated conjugal roles) –> to non-conventional family (joint conjugal roles)
= views other family types as part of life cycle –> not a permanent feature - ppl will end up in nuclear
linked to Young + Willmont - symmetrical family
= men + women both instrumental role
critisisms
= Oakley - dual burden
= some ppl see other family types as permanent stage
modernism: rapoport’s
= diversity is central to family
= meets ppls needs at dif parts of life cycle
