China there was a one child policy which encouraged families to only have one child. Policies such as a tax for second children helped re-enforce this.

View the nuclear family as the best due to it being the most stable with a clear male role to earn money and female expressive role.
what do conservatives believe policies should do?
Encourage marriage, discourage divorce, encourage women to take responsibility as the primary carer of children.
What is the labour familial ideology?
Diverse and choice based society. Family diversity is encouraged. nuclear family is strong yet support lone parent, same sex and reconstituted families.
What do labour believe policies should do?
Enable people to live in whatever type of family they want.
What is a direct policy?
Any policy that directly has an impact on the family. Any policy about marriage, divorce, domestic violence, children, sex.
What is an indirect policy?
A policy that does not have a direct impact on the family, aimed elsewhere in society, but have a knock on effect on the family. Any policy to do with education, the workplace, healthcare and so on.
What is the functionalist perspective on social policy?
The state should be involved in family life. As laws, Etc help the family to perform its roles and functions effectively.
What is the new right perspective on social policies?
Social policies should encourage the nuclear family and discourage all other types.
What is the Marxist view on the family and social policy?
Social policies should only benefit the bourgeoisie (ruling class) as they are ultimately made by them as they run the government.

Although they believe the nuclear family should be encouraged, they also want to ensure all have equal opportunities regardless of their family background.

They believe that the nuclear family is patriarchal and so laws supporting this structure are also patriarchal.
