Beanpole family?
An extended family with 3 or more generations living together, but no aunts, uncles etc. ‘ a tall and thin/ vertically extended family’
Reconstituted families?
A family made up of an adult couple and at least one child from a previous relationship- often from marriage that ended in divorce ( blended family)
Singleton
A person who lives alone- often in early adulthood, after a divorce etc
Single parent family
A family that is headed by one lone parent
Extended families?
A family where other relatives lives with a nuclear family, e.g. Grandparents
Same sex families?
A family led by partners of the same sex, with the same rights as married couples ( since the civil partnership act 2004)
Nuclear family?
Often considered an ‘average family’, consists of a mother, father and dependent child
Neo conventional family
Same as a nuclear family however more women are working therefore it’s a dual earning family
What is secularisation ?
Decline in religion. More people are becoming atheist than Christians
What is liberalisation?
People becoming less traditional. There is less stigma attached to being gay, divorced etc
The family is a social construct. What is a social construct ?
Social construct- it is not fixed but differs between, times, places and cultures; it is constructed by the society it is in
Segregated conjugal roles
Couple has separate roles, male is breadwinner, female is homemaker. Leisure time often separate
Joint conjugal roles
Couple shares, household tasks and childcare. Leisure time often spent together
