what is a family
individuals related by blood, marriage, adoption or cohabitation
what is a household
individuals living together but not related to each other eg. housemates
what is a nuclear family
married couples or cohabiting couple, usually with their dependent children
what is a lone parent family
one parent with their dependent child
what is a reconstituted family
a new family formed when two adults remarry or cohabit and live together with children from a previous relationship
what is a same sex family
families with partners of the same sex living together with their children
what is an empty nest family
when children grow up and move out and the parents continue to live together in the family home
what is an extended family
includes relatives beyond the nuclear family living together
includes grandparents, aunts and uncles
family members are form only 2/3 generations with lots of members from each generation
what is a beanpole family
similar to extended family but includes family members from a lot of generations, but with only a few members from each generation
what is cohabitation
two people in an intimate relationship who live together but are not married
what is monogamy
being married to one partner at a time
what is serial monogamy
having multiple marriages over a lifetime but only one marriage at a time
what is polygamy
being married to more than one person at the same time
what is Murdock’s view of the family (functionalist)
family is a universal institution with universal functions. Families are found in all societies and it performs the same functions everywhere
