a complex collection of interdependent roles and relationships that combine to perform an important social function

family, education, work, government, religion,etc
social reproduction
institutions tend to reproduce themselves over time and transmit inequalities across generations
reproduction
occurs through the transfer of unequally distributed materials and symbolic resources
institutions and social change
institutions are unquestioned paths formed by repeated interactions. change requires a critical mass of people embracing identities attitudes or practices formerly seen as deviant and using them to build new institutions
