MOA: ovarian & pituitary inhibition; thinning of/increase in cervical mucus; endometrial proliferation; cycle control.
Copper-containing IUD
MOA: foreign body effect induced by presence of device in intrauterine cavity results in a sterile inflammatory response that is toxic via a # of mechanisms to sperm & ova impairs implantation. local uterine changes enhanced by presence of copper. approved to remain in place 10 yrs, likely effective up to 20 yrs.
Levonorgestrel-containing IUS/IUD
MOA: foreign body effect induced by presence of device in intrauterine cavity results in a sterile inflammatory response that is toxic to sperm & ova impairs implantation. local uterine changes enhanced by presence of progestin which causes thickening of cervical mucus, resulting in physical barrier to prevent sperm from entering uterus. additional changes include __ induced endometrial thinning that discouraged implantation. approved to remain in place 5 yrs, likely effective up to 7 yrs.
