Fallacies and Rhetorical Devices Flashcards
Antimetabole
Repetition of the words in a clause, but with swapping of subject and object or key phrases:
“I know what I like, but I like what I know”
“In order to make love a part of your life, you have to make life a part of your love”
The two types of deepity
Type 1: Profound if true, but false
Type 2: True, but obvious
Barnum statement
A statement general enough that anyone can relate to it, but with the veneer of being personal
As a psychic or medium would use it: “I’m seeing a Michael in your life. . .” or “Nobody understands the real you”, etc
Hypnotic speech pattern
Slow rate of speech down to ~75% of baseline and emphasize certain words by slowing them even more
Can be used to communicate a sense of “deepness” to speech, even if the content is gibberish.
