Argument against the person, attacking character flaws
Appeal to the people
Appeals to people’s desire to belong to a group. Avoidance of objective evidence in favor of an emotional response
Appeal to pity
Emotional plea that relies solely on a sense of pity for support
Appeal to force
Physical or otherwise threat
Appeal to ignorance
A statement must be true bc it hasn’t been proven false or a statement must be false bc it hasn’t been proven true
Missing the point
When premises seem to be going somewhere and take an unexpected turn
Appeal to unqualified authority
Argument that relies on the opinions of other people who have no expertise training or knowledge relevant to the issue at hand
Begging the question
An argument where the conclusion is the premise
Complex question
Question that contains multiple hidden parts
Biased sample
Non representative sample used as support for a statistical claim about the entire pop
Accident
When a generalization is in appropriately applied to the case at hand
Hasty generalization
Generalization created on the basis of a few instances. Frat guys, brown hair
Misleading precision
Claim that appears statistically significant but is not. 30% less fat
False dichotomy
2 choices are presented when others exist
False dilemma
2 awful choices are presented and others exist
False cause
Connection is assumed to exist bt 2 events when none exists
Coincidence
Accidental chance connection bt 2 events
Post hoc
Fallacy involving either short term or long term pattern noticed after the fact
Common cause fallacy
When 1 thing is thought to cause the other but they were both cause my something else
Slippery slope
Attempts to make a final event of the inevitable outcome of an initial act
Equivocation
Different double meaning of a word
Amphiboly
Poorly constructed statement muddles the intended meaning
Composition
Mistaken transfer of the individual parts of an object to the object as a whole
Division
Mistake transfer of an attribute of an object as a whole to its individual pars
Emphasis

Changes the subject from the argument at hand
