Robespierre was too extreme and was overthrown in the Coup of Thermidor.

Him and his supporters, along with the Paris Commune, were guillotined

Reasons for Robespierres fall

A
  • Long-standing quarrels with supporters of dechristianisation and more extreme supporters of the Terror, notably Fouche
  • Became a figure for ridicule over his role as High Priest of the Cult of the Supreme Being (new religion he created)
  • Lost sans-culottes support because of his attacks on the herbertists
  • His speech about ‘conspiracy against public liberty’ the day before caused fear in his opposition

A

Deputies of the National Convention moved to end the terror by :

  • changing CPS & CGS members frequently
  • Repealing Law of Prairial
  • Abolishing Paris Commune

1795 Parisian Uprisings

A

Thermidorian abolished price controls, leading to inflation.

Germinal - Demonstration in Paris, but national guard stayed loyal to the convention

Prairial - Some national guard members joined the protests. But control was regained
