Failure to Thrive Flashcards
What is a disorder of homeostasis?
The child has a problem regulating their hunger and satiety, resulting in them over or under eating. The parents are not aware of the problem, which exacerbates the issues
What causes a disorder of homeostasis?
the infant has irregular behavioural patterns, and the mother misreads their cues
What is a disorder of attachment?
the attachment between a mother and child breaks down, leading to insensitivity and withdrawal at feeding times/meals. Lack of pleasure in feeding leads to the child losing weight
What causes a disorder of attachment?
the mother is withdrawn and insensitive, and the infant will respond to this behaviour in a similar way
What is a disorder of separation and individuation?
the mother finds it difficult to allow the child to develop autonomous eating. This can lead to a battle for control at mealtimes, making the child unhappy, and leads to difficult mealtimes
What causes a disorder of separation and individuation?
the mother wants to keep control over the feeding, and the child wants more control at a young age
