Facts about Rehab Process Flashcards
What are 3 reasons you would need to call emerge for a possible TBI?
- Loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Convulsions or seizures
- Slurred speech
- Vomiting
7 symptoms of a concussion
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Nausea, vomiting
- Confusion, hard to concentrate
- Bad memory
- Feeling sluggish, pressure in head
- Ringing in the ears
Ways to promote concussion recovery
- Limit screen time
- Stay hydrated
- Rest
- Avoid unnecessary movement of head and neck
What are the 5 parameters of exercises?
Type, duration, freq, intensity, and volume
What are exercise modalities?
Specific method used to encourage a type of reaction from it.
Ex. resistance, aerobic, plyometric training, and stretching
What is the term used in radiology to illustrate that the bone is sufficiently healed to resume all activities without restrictions?
Secondary Bone Healing
List the 12 cranial nerves
Olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducent, facial, vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, hypoglossal
Tendonitis Vs. Bursitis
T - tendons are inflamed. They become weak and swollen.
B - small fluid sacs around the joint (bursa) become inflamed. Swollen around joints, lack or ROM
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
Shin splints. Pain on medial side of tibia.
Strengthen the posterior tibialis, flexor digitorum and soleus muscles
Indications
Soft tissue shortening, bone healing, pain control
Counterindications
Pregnancy, eyes, malignant tumor, reproductive organs
Precautions
May be chance of cardiac disease, imparied sensation, malignant tumors, areas of skin irritation or open wounds
Phonophoresis
Use of ultrasound to drive in topical mediactions into the patient’s skin
List the 5 Modalities
Thermal (heat and cold), light, sound, mechanical, and electrical
Ultrasouns benefits
high fre. sound wave that allows for deep tissue healing.
Relieves pain and muscle spasming, increases blood circulation
What does POLICE stand for
Protect, Optimal, Loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation
When should you apply heat?
when wanting to gain ROM, after swelling has gone down.
What are the 3 phases of rehab?
Repair,
Inflammatory Phase
Deficits: Pain, swelling, lack of strength, ROM, proprioception, bad mental state
Goals: Decrease the pain and inflammation. Protect the injury. Prevent muscle atrophy, deconditioning
Repair Phase basics
Deficits: Decrease in ROM, strength, function
Goals: Eliminate compensations, improve mental, increase ROM, strength, function.
- Focus on protection rather than progression
- Maintenance of flexibility and strength
Remodelling Phase
Deficits: Decreased strength, flexibility. Loss of proprioception, reaction time, neuromuscular control
Goals: optimize movements (eliminate compensation)
Increase proprioception and control, flexibility, improve mental state. Educate on lifestyle habits, prevention
Contrast baths
Limg going between hot and cold temperatured water to reduce muscle fatigue, lactic acid, swelling, pain.
- Hot water for 4 min then cold water for 1. Repeat 3x
What is proprioception? In what phase of rehab do we start working on it?
Awareness of one’s body in space, using joint position and joint motion sense to respond to stresses placed on the body. Start focusing on it in Repair phase
