Factors that may indicate that a chikd is in danger or at risk of abuse Flashcards
What are the 7 types of abuse children may be in danger or at risk of and what do they mean?
- Physical abuse - when someone is physically harmed
- Emotional abuse - when someone is continually emotionally mistreated
- Sexual abuse - when someone is forced to take part in sexual activity.
- Domestic abuse - when there is violent behaviour perpetrated by members of the same household.
- Bullying and cyber bullying - when a child or young person is the victim of bullying or cyber bullying by their peers
- Neglect - when a baby or child’s needs are persistently not being met
- Child criminal exploitation (CCE) - when a child or young person is trafficked or exploited and made to commit crimes for example as part of a gang.
What does research say about the link between a child’s environment and risk factors which may indicate that they are more in danger or at risk?
That there is a link and the factors are divided into individual, parental and environmental factors.
What are individual factors relating to the child or young person?
Individual factors include physical or developmental disabilities and experiences of abusive relationships.
How do these individual factors impact a child or young person?
- They may be unable to stop the abuser, more vulnerable, have less understanding, and be less likely to tell others.
- Abuse is already present in the home, affecting their well-being.
-There is a lack of secure attachment with their parent or carer - this lack of attachment will increase the likelihood of abuse.
What are parental factors that can influence child abuse?
Parental factors include a history of abuse, unrealistic expectations, need for parenting support, isolation, mental illness, and substance abuse.
How does a parent’s history of abuse affect their likelihood to abuse?
A parent who has already abused or been abused as a child is more likely to abuse.
What are unrealistic expectations in parenting?
Parents may have unrealistic expectations of their child due to being uninformed or lacking knowledge about child development.
What support might parents need?
Parents may need support with parenting skills, such as managing dietary or health needs.
How does parental isolation affect child abuse risk?
Parental isolation increases the likelihood of abuse, as those with less support are more vulnerable.
What role does parental mental illness play in child abuse?
Parental mental illness can be a significant factor in the risk of child abuse.
How can substance abuse affect parenting?
Parental drug or alcohol abuse may stem from low self-esteem and lack of control, contributing to abuse.
What impact does overcrowding in the home have?
Overcrowding in the home can lead to increased stress levels, which may contribute to abuse.
How does poverty relate to child abuse?
Poverty or lack of opportunity to improve resources can increase the risk of child abuse.
What is the effect of domestic violence on child abuse?
Domestic violence in the home indicates that violence is already present, increasing the risk of child abuse.
