Examples of sociocultural factors
Income
Education Levels
High Body weight impacts on health (biological)
Overweight and obesity related conditions: CVD, T2DM and osteoarthritis
Impaired glucose impacts on health (biological)
T2DM - unregulated BGL can lead to tiredness, kidney disease, stroke or heart attack
low quality education impacts on health (sociocultural)
low levels of health literacy e.g. safe sex practices, dangers high fat diet or smoking or excess alcohol intake, etc lead to relevant disease….
low income levels (sociocultural)
Reduce the ability of people to AFFORD resources to maintain their health e.g. education lead to relevant disease…
Poor housing (environmental)
Overcrowding increases risk of communicable disease e.g. influenza
Poor ventilation increases risk of respiratory diseases e.g. asthma
Poor cooking and food storage decreases intake fresh food/intake food high in trans fat increased risk of positive energy balance and obesity
Geographic Location
Increased Distance and Travel:
- longer travel times and difficulties in accessing healthcare services, especially specialist services.
Service Availability:
- leads to limited access to both Indigenous-specific services and general GP services.
- Increased cost of fresh fruit and vegetables due to increased transport costs
Lack of Transport makes it difficult for people in remote areas to access healthcare facilities and or quality education
