Factors That Affect Aquatic Systems Flashcards
Water Depth?
Most species live closer to the water’s surface. Aquatic ecosystems also include those species that live around the water source.
Currents?
The rising and sinking of the water help distribute vital nutrients to organisms that depend on them. These currents also deliver oxygen and regulate temperature.
Overfishing?
Certain species have been overfished and have affected the food chain, lower food sources for other species that depend on them.
Pollutants?
Pollution has affected many aquatic species and their ecosystems.
Temperature?
Organisms thrive off different temperatures.
Normal streams being 0-25 Celsius
Subtropical and tropical being 30-40 Celsius
Turbidity?
The clearness of the water.
Cloudy water can reduce food, ruin spawning beds, and affect gill function.
Sunlight?
More sunlight affects plant growth, more life is found in areas with more sunlight.
Nutrients?
Aquatic species can affect the growth of plants. If there are too many minerals and nitrogen, algae can build up in large amounts. These algae can take up oxygen and decrease food.
Salinity?
Freshwater species can’t live in areas with high salinity. Ocean species have adapted to this.
