Factors Influencing Choices of Research Method Flashcards
1
Q
What are four aspects of practical issues?
A
- time and money
- funding body
- personal skills and social status
- research opportunity
2
Q
What are four aspects of ethical issues?
A
- informed consent
- confidentiality and privacy
- protection
- vulnerable groups
3
Q
How would you summarise the positivist research approach?
A
- prefer quantitative data
- seek to discover patterns of behaviour
- see sociology as a science
- top-down sociology
- more concerned with reliability
- focused more on macro
4
Q
How would you summarise the interpretivist research approach?
A
- prefer qualitative data
- seek to understand social actors’ meanings
- reject the view that sociology is a science
- bottom-up sociology
- more concerned with validity
- focused more on micro
5
Q
Why is time and money an issue?
A
- different methods require different amounts of time and money which might influence a sociologist’s choice
- eg. large studies require researchers who need paying
6
Q
Why is the funding body an issue?
A
- funder of the research may be in a position to dictate how they want the research to be conducted, what form the results should be in and duration of research
7
Q
Why are personal skills and social status an issue?
A
- the sociologist’s own personality and character, as well as their own status, may impact on their ability to use different methods
Personal skills: - if someone was confident/ shy
- talkative/ quiet
Social status: - class, ethnicity etc. can impact topic and method
- high social status might get more funding
- biased towards those they identify with
8
Q
Why is research opportunity an issue?
A
- sometimes the research opportunity turns up unexpectedly whereas in others it is planned well in advance, this will impact on the suitability of certain methods
- eg. if it’s spontaneous you may use interviews, not questionnaires
9
Q
Why is informed consent an issue?
A
- research participants should be given the chance to agree or refuse to participate
- decision should be ‘informed’ so information of the study should be offered so they’re not deceived
10
Q
Why is confidentiality and privacy an issue?
A
- researchers should respect the privacy of the participants and the identity and personal information of the participants should remain confidential
11
Q
Why is protection an issue?
A
- researchers need to be aware of the possible effects of their work on those they study and where possible should try to anticipate and prevent any harmful consequences
12
Q
Why are vulnerable groups an issue?
A
- special care should be taken when research participants are particularly vulnerable due to age, mental health etc.
