Factors affecting site - Mapwork Flashcards
Nearest conurbations
Close cities provide people who will use the new site
Drainage
Flat land will lead to low surface runoff/steep land will lead to high surface runoff
Flood plain of river leaves site open to flooding
Room to Expand
Flat unused land next to the site provides space to expand if initial site is successful
Geology and soil type
Sedimentary rock eg sandstone is good for building, it is also permeable so aids drainage. Sedimentary rock is associated with good farmland
Influence of seasons
Winter could lead to dangerous icy conditions and a lack of people visiting.
Too busy in summer could lead to congestion as lots of tourists go to site
Nearby roads, transport hubs
Allows people coming to the site to easily commute
Gradient of slope
Steep gradients make it hard to build on
Altitude
High altitude will be cold (lapse rate) this will affect vegetation, may not be suitable depending on the site
Aspect
Direction site faces will affect the climate, micro climate may be created how will this impact site
Sustainability
Economy
Energy source
Building materials
Impact upon locals and environment
This may affect why a site is chosen depending on the purpose of the site
Cost of land
Land further away from CBD will be cheaper (bid rent theory) this will allow a bigger site to be built, transport must be considered
Infrastructure
Sewage, look at wind direction could lead to unpleasant smell.
Electricity
Rubbish collection
