Factors Affecting Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name the 4 limiting factors for photosynthesis
1) Amount of light
2) Carbon dioxide concentration
3) Amount of chlorophyll
4) Temperature
How does the amount of light affect photosynthesis?
- More light = faster rate of photosynthesis
- There is an optimum rate of photosynthesis (rate will continue to increase and level out at optimum)
How does carbon dioxide concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- More CO2 = faster rate of photosynthesis
- Until optimum level is reached, rate will increase but begin to level out at optimum level
How does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Higher temperature = higher rate of photosynthesis
- Graph is shaped like a triangle
- Rate of photosynthesis will DECREASE after around 45 degrees Celsius is reached - enzymes in chlorophyll are destroyed
How does the amount of chlorophyll affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- More chlorophyll = More Energy absorbed = quicker rate of photosynthesis
Do root hair cells contain chlorophyll? Why/why not?
No
Their function is to absorb nutrients and minerals from 5he soil, not to photosynthesise (no chloroplasts)
