factors affecting obedience and dissent (pack 1 obedience) Flashcards
what are the three factors affecting obedience?
- individual differences
- situational variables
- culture
what are the two sub topics within individual differences?
personality
gender
what are the three aspects of personality?
i. locus of control
ii. authoritarianism
iii. empathy
who developed locus of control?
Rotter
what does locus of control refer to?
the extent that people are in control of their own situation and lives
what do people with external locus of control believe?
that behaviour is largely beyond their control
what do people with internal locus of control believe?
that they are responsible for their own actions
what is authoritarianism?
a personality trait characterised by hostility to people of a different race, social group, age, sexuality or other minority
how do those with authoritarianism treat other people?
submissive to authority
harsh to those seen as subordinate to themselves
who created the F-scale to measure authoritarianism?
Theodor Adorno
what did MILGRAM AND ELMS find that supported authoritarianism?
compared F-scale scores for 20 obedient and 20 defiant ppt. Obedient ppts had a higher F-scale
what did DAMBRUN AND VALENTINE fins that supported authoritarianism?
conducted a simulation of Milgram’s experiment using a virtual environment. Found high authoritarianism scores meant more likely to be obedient
what did BURGER find in relation to empathy influencing obedience
although people who score high on empathy were more likely to protest against giving electric shocks, this did not translate to lower levels of obedience
How may some people suggest gender influences obedience
lower as women are more empathetic
higher as they may be more obedient as they stereotypically are more likely to comply
What did Milgram find in a variation of a study to do with gender
with 40 female teachers- virtually identical to male ppts but reported anxiety much higher than men, this was also found in Burger’s studies
