Factors affecting management Flashcards
List the eight factors which affect management
Employment patterns Management of dual roles Socio-economic status Stages in the family life cycle Values and standards Composition of family Culture Gender roles
How do employment patterns affect management?
3
Single-income families may need to manage their income wisely to cover the household’s needs
Dual-income families may have greater financial resources to meet the household’s needs and wants but they may struggle to find family time
Shift work can sometimes mean one parent has to take on more responsibilities during the day, mealtimes and sleeping patterns may also be affected
How does dual roles affect management?
2
If both parents are employed they have the roles of both earner and family manager, both parents will have to take equal responsibility for household tasks
In one-parent homes the parent is both the earner and family manager without the support of a partner which can be challenging and stressful as it puts strain on resources
How does socio-economic status affect management?
3
Lower socio-economic status families may prioritise meeting basic needs before wants
Higher socio-economic status families often have income left over after their basic needs are met so they may prioritise wants
Children from higher socio-economic status have more supports which allow them to access third level education which affects management
How do the stages in the family life cycle affect management?
(3)
As children get older their input becomes more and more important in family decision making and how the home is managed
Older people may have reduced income and decreased agility which will affect the management system
The arrival of children, number of children and the age of children all affect management of a home as more money or time may be spent on children at specific ages
How do values and standards affect management?
2
Values and standards of a family affect their choices e.g. concern for animal welfare will influence decisions in relation to products bought
A change in circumstances such as a family member becoming ill will cause family members to re-evaluate their values and in turn change their management system
How does the composition of a family affect management?
3
The number of old people affect management as they need constant care due to illness
The number of children affect management as they need constant care at a young age which must be provided at home or in childcare
The number of family members with special needs affect management as they may require 24-hour care or frequent hospital visits
How does culture affect management?
4
The impact of certain areas such as diet and the role of women affect family management
Jewish people must remain kosher and refrain from eating pork
Women are forbidden from driving in Saudi Arabia
Religious ceremonies such as First Holy Communion for Catholic families require resources which affects management
How do gender roles affect management?
3
Parents should participate equally in all household tasks regardless of gender, to highlight the importance of gender equality to children
Every family member should contribute to household management with tasks being allocated fairly based on skills. availability of time and preferences, rather than gender
Women no longer have to stay at home and do all the housework, now men are involved in childrearing and household tasks
