Disposable income is the money left after taxes have been paid
How does disposable income affect food consumption pattern?
As disposable income increases, people are more willing and able to consume more and different types of food, hence people consume more meat and lesser cereals
Eg. An increase of $1 in New Zealand results in 20% spending on food
Does increased pricing of food affect DCs or LDCs more?
LDCs
How does pricing affect food consumption patterns n LDCs ?
When prices increase, many people in the LDCs will not be able to afford food, as a result they may suffer from chronic hunger
It might also result to social unrest such as protest and riots

How does food preferences affect food consumption patterns?
The young adults prefer fast food as it is cheap, easy to prepare and convinient, hence the consumption of fast food like KFC, MacDonald’s and burger king increase
People are now more health concious nowadays hence they will opt for organic food which often have more beneficial nutrients as they are not grown with chemical fertilisers or growth hormones
Hindus are not allowed to consume beef hence the consumption of beef in India is very low

When the population increases, the demand of food increases
Population growth is more common in LDCs why?
LDCs tend to have low adult literacy rates, hence there is a lack of family planning
There is a need for farm labour

What does it mean when a country have a stable food supply
When there is enough safe and nutritious food available for all the people at all times, the country has a stable food supply
What affects food stability of a country?
Civil War
Eg. 2011 Libyan cilvil war
Natural disaster
Eg. Dry weather in Zimbawee
Bird Flu
What does food safety refers to?
It is a system which provides guidelines and ensure proper handling, preparation, transportation and storage to prevent food borne diseases
For example the Mad Cow disease (A person will catch the disease if they ate an infected cow)
How does food borne diseases affect food consumption patterns?
When there is an outbreak of food borne disease such as the Mad Cow Disease, it will lead to a decrease in consumption of beef as people are afraid to contract the disease
