Factors Affecting Enzyme Activity Flashcards
What four factors affect enzyme activity?
- Protein Structure
- Substrate Concentration
- pH
- Temperature
What is denaturation?
Denaturation is the change in shape of an active site due to high temperatures breaking bonds in protein molecules
What effect do high temperatures have on enzyme activity?
High temperatures cause a change in the enzymes shape (denaturation), making the enzyme not act properly at too high of a temperature
What effect does pH have on enzyme activity?
If an enzyme has a pH level not best suited for it, it’ll have a similar response as it did for temperature
What effect does substrate concentration have on enzyme activity?
The enzyme levels and substrate concentration have a positive relationship
What is an inhibitor?
An inhibitor is a chemical which interferes with the enzymes functions (some attach to active site)
