Factorial Designs Flashcards
What is a factorial design?
When more than one independent variable/predictor has been manipulated
What does n way mean?
The number of independent/predictor variables manipulated
e.g. - 2 way - 2 IV’s
What are the ways that participants can be allocated?
Independent design - different people in conditions
Repeated designs - same people in all conditions
Mixed design - different people in conditions of one IV, same people in conditions of one IV
What is the benefit of factorial designs?
We can look at how variables interact
What do interaction/moderation effects show?
How the effects of one predictor might depend on the effects of another
What does moderation mean?
When the link between the outcome and predictor is moderated/changed by another predictor
it affects the relationship between two others
What is an interaction term?
The product of two variables
What does a interaction effect mean?
We have a significant moderation effect
How do you partition variance?
Slice up the model sum of squares into main effects of the predictors and then their interaction effect
How do you know if their is an interaction?
Flat slope - no interaction
Lines parallel - no interaction
Means at the same place - no difference
