What is Facilities Design Layout
Management of facilities design and layout is planning the arrangement of the workspace and doing so that it creates a smooth flowing production area. It is also makes sure that equipment and technology are arranged in such a way to increase the productivity and maximise efficiency within the operations system.
Fixed position layout
Fixed position layout deals with large scale projects, such as construction of bridges, ships, aircraft or buildings. With fixed position layout it is more efficient to bring materials to the one area. This layout would be used when it would be to difficult to move the product.
Disadvantage- hard to keep all the materials safely stored
Product layout
A product layout deals with the manufacturing of good in mass volume through an assembly line. The machinery and equipment are arranged in a line and components are added to the product in a sequence of steps
Advantage- cost is reduced because of the use of technology
Disadvantage- Very expensive to set up the machinery and employees can get bored very easy due to the repetitiveness of production.
Process Layout
A process layout deals with high varieties of products by grouping activities, equipment and machinery of similar functions together. A process layout is best suited to organisations that deal with production of multiple products or may provide more than one stage in a service organisation.
The set up can be based in a U position as it can boost employee team building and communication and less staff is required
Disadvantage- work can be repetitive if employees are involved in one stage of the process
Retail Layout
Retail Layout guides customers through departments or sections and exposes customers to their isles or sections as they move from one point to another. Barriers are plane for customers to see what is being showcased or displayed by the organisation.
Disadvantage- can be hard to move from one side of the store to the other.
Office Layout
Office layout focuses on efficient movement of information and proximity to resources such as photocopier or printer. Creating workstations together in departments that must be in communication with each other constantly is very important. Office layouts may need to provide specific areas to meet employee needs such as break rooms. In a manufacturing firm the office will overlook the factory making it easier for managers to keep an eye on things and service firms want to make there clients feel safe and receive excellent help
