facial nerve Flashcards
components of the facial nerve
SVE - Special Visceral Efferent
GVE - General Visceral Efferent
SVA - Special Visceral Afferent
GSA - General Somatic Afferent
where does the SVE SPecial Visceral Efferent end
facial terminal branches (temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandible and cervical)
posterior belly of occipitofrontalis, stylohyoid and and posterior belly of digastric muscle
list the ganglions of the GVE General Visceral Efferent
2 parasympathetic motor ganglia
submandibular ganglion
pterygopalatine ganglion
where does SVA terminate
anterior 2/3 of tongue
where does the GSA terminate
mastoid process
General path at the beginning of the facial nerve
Brainstem Cerebello pontine angle Internal acoustic meatus Facial canal Go through Inner ear Then to Geniculate ganglion in middle ear first medially then posteriorly in middle ear
Path of 1/2 GVE
Gives off greater superficial petrosal nerve exits temporal bone through greater petrosal foramen
Greater superficial petrosal nerve converge with deep petrosal nerve as it descends through foramen lacerum
Greater + deep petrosal nerve form Vidian nerve continue through Vidian anteriorly till it reach pterygopalatine ganglion in pterygopalatine fossa
Path of 2/2 of GVE and SVA
1/2GVE + SVA = chorda tympani
Through petrotympanic fissure enter infra temporal fossa
Join lingual branch nerve to mandible
GVE terminate in submandibular ganglion and submandibular and salivary gland
SVA continue w/ lingual till it reaches anterior 2/3 tongue
Path of SVE
Enters the Medial wall of the middle ear
SVE - Exits through stylomastoid foramen
Gives rise to posterior auricular nerve, gives rise to other nerves; nerve for posterior belly of occipitofrontalis, stylohyoid, posterior digastric
Enter parotid gland divide into 2 then reunite
Give rise to 5 terminal branches temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandible, cervical
